Maldives will develop as an Islamic nation, with over 99% of the population supporting to enforce Islamic values in the country.
In spite of this, Maldives and Maldivians are fully respectful to other religions. Maldivians welcome followers of other faiths with respect, dignity and honor. Every tourist who visits Maldives is reminded of this fact and the increase in arrivals is testament to this fact.
Even though there are many falsified accounts regarding the nation, the truth is very apparent to anyone who actually investigates the claims.
A self-proclaimed journalist, by the name of “Davy” had recently written that divorce is not an issue among the public. He also wrote that the issue of illegitimate children was an issue and was a punishable offence.
A claim like this, though factual, is a misrepresentation of the situation. Divorce in Islam is allowed and is not punishable. However, in Maldives, the number of divorces are higher than normal, which had led the Government to instate special measures to rectify the issue. The issues resulting from divorces are social issues, which need to be addressed promptly, by the Government.
Begetting children out of wedlock is a punishable crime in Islam, as it goes against the covenant set by Allah. Therefore, enacting the punishment prescribed for the act, is mandatory.
Presenting claims made on facts which are not representative of the situation only damages the nation and the citizens. These acts are perpetrated to denigrate the nation. Only strict action at a national level will prevent such instances occurring in the future.
