President honors late Abdullah Hameed’s memorial
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has honored the late statesman Abdullah Hameed at the memorial ceremony held in Dharubaaruge, Monday night.

The ceremony was organized by Dhivehi Bahuge Academy. Speaking in the ceremony, the Academy’s President Ashraf Ali said that the ceremony was organized by the Academy to honor Abdullah Hameed for his contribution to the Dhivehi language, in spite of his busy schedule.

Ashraf noted the wide range of works contributed by Abdullah Hameed, stating that he was a wordsmith, author and a historian. He was noted for his preference for Dhivehi language, only using a foreign word in his speech, unless it was absolutely necessary.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, former Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Zahir and close friend Adam Abdu Rahman also spoke in the ceremony.

A CD of Abdullah Hameed’s speeches, a memorial issue of Faiythoora, memoir of Abdullah Hameed and the condolence book opened by the Academy in the event of his death was handed over to the family by President Yameen.

Abdullah Hameed’s children Hamdhoon and Hala Hameed also spoke in the ceremony, offering thanks in their speech. Hamdhoon Hameed read out a poem written in his father’s memory by the entire family.

Families of President Yameen, former President Maumoon and close friends took part in the ceremony.

Abdullah Hameed passed away on 18th August 2015, while seeking treatment for cardiac complications in Bengaluru. At the time of death, he was 76 years old. He was survived by 11 children and 23 grandchildren.
