Govt. not interested in making unrealizable pledges: Dr. Shainee
Fisheries and Agriculture Minister and Economic Council Co-Chair, Dr. Mohamed Shainee has stated that the Government will never list any pledges in the budget that cannot be fulfilled.

Dr. Shainee said that the Government will never use ‘smoke and mirrors’ when it comes to the development of the nation. He noted that the year’s budget is a reflection of what the Government wants to achieve in that year.

He noted that the opposition had questioned on the lower number of development projects listed in this year’s budget. However, Dr. Shainee noted that most of the budget was claimed by PSIP investments. He added that 2016’s budget was drawn up with this view in mind.

Dr. Shainee noted that the budget for 2016 had also included a provision to finish all projects that had been included in the budget from 2013 onwards. He added that such projects had been lying dormant due to lack of finances.

“897 projects were included in the budget. Out of that 589 projects are overdue ones,” Dr. Shainee said.

He added that 308 projects were completely new projects, therefore, the claims of the opposition, there were not many projects in the budget was unfounded. Dr. Shainee stressed that this budget is one that can be fully implemented and that this Government was more than capable to do so.
