Addu City Mayor Sadiq has said that the flooding in the City was escalated due to the blocked pipes of the drainage system.
Speaking to Miadhu, Sadiq said that the issue was not given consideration when pipes were laid earlier this year. He added that MRDC and MNDF officials were now cleaning the pipes of the blockages. He noted that the land area where most of the flooding had occurred was lower than the road and the land composition was different. Sadiq said that a permanent solution was required for the issue.
Mayor Sadiq said that in some houses flood levels reached a foot and many household appliances and furniture were damaged. He added that the community had stepped in to assist those who had no food or shelter.
Mayor added that Disaster Management Center had been keeping a close eye on the flooding.
No additional flooding has been reported and the rains have abated.
