Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has said that the Government will reject any and all demands that call to circumvent the law and the Constitution.
Speaking to Miadhu, regarding the demands posed to the Government by opposition MDP, Muaz said that in their tenure MDP had acted illegally and as such may want to impose the same means on the current Government. However, he assured that the present Government will not act in any such manner.
Muaz added that freeing an individual sentenced to 13 years was not something the Government or the President could and would do.
Muaz noted that two independent commissions were charged with conducting investigations and prosecutions and that the President will not dictate their mandates.
“The President cannot dictate if a case should or should not be conducted on an individual. This aspect is extremely clear,” Muaz said.
Muaz also noted that even MDP can also submit any suspected corruption cases seen from the Government.
“If anyone sees an issue with a minister, they can submit the issue. It is a right open to the public,” he added.
Muaz also said that the public were extremely clear of the motives of the opposition, citing that they had only posed the demands after the planned mass protest failed at the grassroots.
He noted that the demands posed in the “Minjuvaan” protests, were demands that neither the President nor the Government were capable of
carrying out. Muaz said that the purpose of the demands were to goad the Government into committing illegal actions, as the Government had always acted legally.
Muaz added that MDP were talking of increasing the protest timings to mask the defeat of their motives. He remarked that MDP had always worked to create chaos and this itself was deeply saddening.
