State Minister for Environment Ministry Abdul Matheen Mohamed has said that SAARC needed to find avenues that will bring success to the whole region.
He made the statement, speaking in the SAARC Workshop on the topic “Energy Based Livelihoods Contributing to Economic Empowerment of the Marginalized Sectors and Women in the SAARC Region”.
He said that universities in the SAARC region were capable of carrying out research on various aspects. Therefore, he stressed that SAARC nations had to find a way to capitalize on this talent to create projects that will facilitate development.
Matheen added that Maldives was successful in introducing renewable energy to the economy, to lessen the dependency on oil. As such, he noted that Maldives generates four megawatts of clean energy from solar power, with an additional four megawatts to be generated in the near future.
He also noted that Maldives was the only country in the region with full electricity coverage.
