President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has said that Maldives wished to be understood.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to mark two years to this Government’s foreign policy and the fiftieth anniversary of Maldives as a member of UN.
President Yameen said another nation had issued such calls as the international community remained largely unaware of the circumstances and situation facing the nation. He also said that major powers made their decisions, without understanding the core issues of the nation. President Yameen added that all decisions undertaken and implemented were transparent to the world.
“For every visiting dignitary, we show our books. Therefore, they need to be aware, more aware. Then, they will know that our actions are within the means of the law,” he said.
President Yameen said that all visitors had gone back to their respective nations, with that assurance firmly embedded. He added that in spite of this, issues rose only due to smaller nations not being able to function as per the UN constitution.
He cited the misuse of UN charter by major powers as the biggest weakness of the UN. President Yameen said that this was the most damaging aspect for humanity. He added that for peace to thrive, all nations had to respect the differences.
President Yameen called on all to reflect on the criticisms to understand the issues facing the body. He said that even though the UN was the largest body, it had to reflect inwards to improve.
