President expresses grave concerns over UN actions
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has expressed grave concerns over the actions of the United Nations (UN).

He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to mark two years to this Government’s foreign policy and the fiftieth anniversary of Maldives as a member of UN.

President said that it was an honor to be a part of the biggest global organization. However, he said that there was much room to question some aspects of the UN.

“Processes at the UN sometimes clash intensely with the local foreign policy and internal affairs. When the UN was founded, it was founded with the aspirations of many. However, today we see that UN had consistently failed to prevent many injustices. This has been clearly notd by scholars, researches and other nations,” he said.

President Yameen noted that the biggest weakness of the UN, was their inability to stop local and regional conflicts, some of which had lasted for years. He added that many had pointed out the glaring procedural and principle differences between the UN General Assembly and the Security Council and the whole UN.

President Yameen also added that many of the powerful nations directly flaunt the UN charter within the UN by finalizing decisions at the sidelines. He noted that this was extremely predominant when it came to foreign policies of other nations. Therefore, President said that the UN was unable to bring a solution to even the most basic issues, especially for the smallest nations.

“We see that decisions are undertaken, with no justice, irrespective of the severity of the situation,” he added.

President Yameen said that within UN, political organizations had formed, with many of the world powers taking an active role in trying to influence other smaller nations. He cited that Maldives had been a victim of this as well.

“However, the UN charter emphasizes mutual respect, room to defend national liberties,” President said.

However, President Yameen said that this had occurred not because UN was a weak body. He added that the UN was a UN only when the nations respected the body’s charter.

“If the member nations wished to influence outcomes, they can do so from within the UN or any other international body. That’s why we see glaring differences between the levels of justice,” he said.

President Yameen remarked that he did not believe that this trend will change. He added that interference into local policies and rule will only create more injustice. He stressed on the vitality of personal liberties to create peace and justice.

The President cited scholars who had said that the current situation had only occurred due to the failure of NATO nations to successfully implement their foreign policy over the past 15 years. President Yameen noted that enacting measures on small nations will not resolve the matter, calling for diplomacy and national interests to be prioritized. He added that Maldivians did not believe in different rulings on special individuals.
