Italy donates EUR4 million for environment protection
An MOU has been signed between Maldives and Italy, under which Italy had pledged a donation of EUR 4 million for environmental protection projects.

The MOU was signed on Wednesday. Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and director general of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, Dr. Francesco La Camera signed the contract in the sidelines of the ongoing COP21 summit.

Under the MOU, Maldives will enhance efforts to mitigate climate change effects, protect environment and natural resources and promote clean energy.

Additionally Maldives will undertake research on the effects of climate change on agriculture, tourism and health, protection of island beaches, provide clean water, waste management, implement Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC), and introduce green and low carbon alternatives.

Speaking in the signing ceremony, Minister Thoriq thanked the Italian Government for their assistance. He assured that many projects will be carried out from the donation.

Dr. Francesco had also assured that Italy will continue to give assistance and support to the Maldives, especially with regard to climate change issues.
