State Minister at Environment Ministry Abdul Matheen has said that the recently concluded COP 21 summit was a success because the world saw and accepted the work that was carried out by the nation.
Speaking to Miadhu, Matheen said that the work carried out by the Maldivian delegation was closely viewed by the international media. He added that Maldives as the chair of AOSIS, had worked immensely to secure the rights of the small island nations.
“Maldives was not working for show or fame. We worked on real issues, we voiced out our concerns. It was accepted by the other nations,” he said.
Matheen said that Maldives wanted a 1.5 degree legally binding agreement, even though the world had agreed on a 2 degree cap. Nevertheless, Matheen described this a milestone achievement. He added that all nations had reflected deeply on their national and economic interests prior to signing the agreement.
Matheen stated that Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim will share the details of the agreement once he returns back on Monday.
