Difference between Singapore and Maldives is that of conduct: President
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has said that the only difference between Maldives and Singapore is that of conduct.

He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held in HA. Utheemu, citing that the two nations achieved independence in the same year, Maldives in July and Singapore in August. However, the level of development in Singapore is far, far more than that of the Maldives.

He attributed this success to the conduct of the Singaporeans.

“In the past 50 years, there was no one to challenge Singapore’s integrity. But political parties exist in the country, as well as rights organizations and other institutions. Singapore has an independent
judiciary. The liberties granted in our Constitution has been given to the Singaporean people long ago,” he said.

In spite of this, President Yameen said that the Singaporeans did not allow any aspect that endangered its sovereignty. He attributed the driving force of the nation to the conduct, ideology and ethics.

President Yameen said that Lee Kwan Yew was a patriot, who believed in democracy, but held conduct and ethics higher than democracy, which has resulted in the Singapore of today.

President Yameen said that all the social ills of the Maldivian society was due to the lack of societal values and morals.
