The Government of Maldives has issued a statement responding to the motion filed in the European Union (EU), calling for measures against the nation.
This is the second such motion filed with EU.
A statement released by Foreign Ministry stated that the motion was “the latest in a series of efforts by a select group of MEPs to push for the adoption of baseless resolutions to undermine Maldivian economy and our democracy.” The motion was filed MPs of European Conservatives and Reformists Party and Christian Democrats.
Foreign Ministry stated that the motion was similar to the motion passed in April, in it that the EU member states had no legal obligation to implement the motion.
The motion filed to EU Parliament said that the motion was filed as Maldives had failed to implement the measures noted by the EU. The motion called for targeted sanctions against Government officials and businessmen tied to the Government.
The motion said that the arrest and detention of former President Mohamed Nasheed as a key concern, as well as implementation of death penalty and lack of reform in the judicial system.
Foreign Ministry added that the Maldivian Embassy appointed to EU was closely monitoring the situation.
