Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has said that he intended to make Maldives an exemplary nation in renewable energy and that the Government is fully committed to achieving this target.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to launch the net metering system to link renewable energy to the current power grid. Minister Thoriq said that past efforts have shown that the target can be met.
He said that in some of the islands, half of the energy needs are generated by renewable sources. He also said that one resort runs completely on renewable energy.
Minister Thoriq noted that BML had a MVR 500 million loan facility for renewable energy projects and urged all to make use of this facility. He added that the Government was championing and actually implementing environment protection measures such as installing LED lights.
Minister also reflected on the economic and environment issues arising from the use of non-renewable energy sources. He noted that the renewable energy project cannot be carried out by the Government alone and that the project needed the assistance of the public sector. He stressed that renewable energy needed to be the primary energy resource to mitigate climate change issues.
