Based on the current statistics it is expected that Maldives will make significant records in generating energy from renewable sources.
Previously, the country had the capacity to generate only four megawatts of clean energy.
An agreement signed with a Chinese company late last year, will add another four megawatts of electricity from clean energy. Based on these estimates, it is expected that the electricity generation from clean renewable sources can be doubled this year.
Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has said that Maldives have to act now rather than wait for international assistance to protect an environment that is ours to begin with.
Thoriq said that all the projects to protect the environment cannot be carried out without the assistance of developed nations, noting that technical and financial assistance is urgently required.
