Ruling PPM Parliamentary Group Leader and Vilimale’ Constituency MP Ahmed Nihan has said that the previous experiences of a Vice President had not been successful for the Maldives and therefore, constitutional changes must be made to facilitate easier impeachment of a Vice President.
Speaking to press, Nihan said that currently 2/3 votes of the Parliament was required to facilitate an impeachment. However, he said the Party was considering to change it to 1/3 vote of the Parliament members. He added that this view was shared by some other members of the Parliament as well.
He noted that some members had even proposed to nullify the position of Vice President, citing concern over the past.
“These have to be deliberated over a long period of time, considering every aspect. It cannot be carried out easily. Opinion of party members and Council must be sought,” Nihan said.
Deputy Leader of PPM Abdu Raheem said that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been removed from the Party. He added that the vacant Deputy Leader position, will soon likely be filled, as the Party Council is deliberating the issue. However, he said that no candidate had been finalized as yet.
“We expect to make a decision on the issue in the next Council meeting,” he said.
