Democracy is not about numbers: Zuhoor
Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Zuhoor has said that democracy is not about increasing the number of members in the party, but rather the use of majority to govern wisely and to bring progress to a nation.

He made the statement, speaking in the ceremony held in Hoarafushi island of Haa Alif Atoll to mark the Democracy Week organized by Elections Commission.

Minister Zuhoor said that Australia had a population of 23 million people, out of which only 40,000 members were members of the ruling coalition. In spite of this, Minister Zuhoor said that the democratic system in Australia was one of the most sophisticated ones in the world. He added that this was evidence that democracy depended on values and not the number of members in a party.

Minister Zuhoor said that impoliteness and lies were not hallmarks of democracy and that the youth need to be made aware of this.

He also levelled harsh criticism against the former President Mohamed Nasheed, who had claimed that they could run a nation on a laptop and revenues from a single resort. Minister Zuhoor said that the rule of Mohamed Nasheed had ended with immense debts for the nation, with the citizens suffering the brunt of the economic hardships. He added that this had occurred as many had fallen prey to the compelling tales that Nasheed had spun.

Minister Zuhoor said that the citizens have to be united in the face of such issues, adding that it was essential to develop the nation further.
