A number of local surfers have expressed concern over the loss of the Raalhugandu area, filing the issue with the Housing Ministry.
Many of the divers who filed the issue said that futsal areas can be created in any location, but surfers are dependent on the natural surf spots. They said that any disruptions to natural wave flow can have a heavy, possibly irreversible impact.
Most of the surfers say that they are now banned from surfing at the Raalhugandu area, adding that they had not been informed of this development.
“It’s not only the locals. Visiting tourists surf there too, it is a hotspot for tourists,” one surfer said.
In spite of the concerns issued by local surfers, Housing Ministry has assured that the construction of the bridge will not hamper the surfing in the area and that the waves will not change.
