STELCO Managing Director Abdu Shukoor Salih has said that he wished to ensure that 33 percent of staff were women.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held by the company to honor the work carried out by their female staff in connection to the international women’s day.
Shukoor said that currently 90 staff in the company are women, which amounts to 13 percent of the entire workforce.
“I want to raise that number to 30 to 33 percent,” he said.
Shukoor said that women are employed in the island engine houses and that three of the engine houses had female heads.
In last night’s ceremony 52 female employees in four sectors were awarded for their services to the company. Eight employees were noted for their long service, 10 employees from the technical pool, four employees in the managerial level and three most promising employees were given honorary shields.
Health Minister Irthisham Adam said that talented women are in the professional field and that even the world was working to balance the scales.
