PPM PG Leader and Vilimale’ Constituency MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has revealed that the hotly contested Defamation Bill has been repealed and in place a new bill has been submitted to the Parliament.
A tweet posted by the Parliamentarian said the Defamation bill had been repealed. His tweet also said a new bill had been submitted to the Parliament.
The repealed bill was a hotly contested one among journalists, who had on many occasions taken to the streets to protest the bill. They had also shared their concerns with their foreign counterparts and major media.
The repealed bill said any individual who had published an article or depiction defaming an individual or with anti-islamic rhetoric will be fined by any amount between MVR 100000 and MVR 5 million.
