A senior Member of the Parliament has stated that they were now concerned over the internal status of UK.
Speaking to Miadhu, the MP, also a senior ranking official of PPM, said the UK was the mother of the Commonwealth and that the status of the mother was deeply concerning to the whole of the Commonwealth.
“A direct attack on an MP on the roads, in broad day light, using guns or knives, which had resulted in death of an MP, even if it was an opposition MP is seriously concerning. This is a clear sign that the ruling Conservatives do not have a grip on the internal situation of the country,”
He also said this was a cowardly act from the country and reflected poorly on the nation. The MP said that this was not something that the head of Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II would have wished to see in her long reign as monarch of UK and the head of Commonwealth.
“She is a revered and a love figure both in UK and all Commonwealth nations,”
“Even if something small happened on Male’ streets, UK had expressed concerns over it, create many ramifications over it. Over the past 4,5 years we had seen this consistently,”
He also questioned whether if it was prudent to visit the country, given the unsafe nature.
“Maldives is also a Commonwealth member; we want peace in all Commonwealth member nations. Especially protection and security for key figures of the nation such as Parliament Members,”
The Parliament Member also said the citizens of the two countries were closely linked and over the years had built lasting bonds, adding that he wished to see better relations between the Governments of the two nations.
