Supreme Court of the Maldives has upheld the death penalty verdict issued by Criminal Court on Hussain Humam (H. Lobby) on the murder of late Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
The late Parliamentarian was murdered between 11.30pm and 2.00am on October 1,2012 in the stairwell of his residence.
The verdict announced by the Court today said that there were no legal grounds to dismiss or nullify the verdict passed by Criminal Court and supported by the High Court. The verdict also said that the verdicts passed by Criminal Court and High Court were accurate.
Supreme Court had passed verdict at the time when Afrasheem’s next of kin had urged not to implement the death penalty as the Police had said the investigation was not fully completed. A letter sent by the next of kin stated that though the police had claimed that someone had paid Humam to orchestrate the murder, they had not been able to find out who had paid the money. Given the circumstance, the next of kin said that they did not wish to implement the death penalty.
This is the first time High Court had passed to support the death penalty verdict.
The state now has a 30-day period to implement the death penalty.
