Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that the planned mass rally for the 11th of this month on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of MDP cannot be held.
The decision was announced in a meeting held between Police and Party officials in Iskandar Koshi, regarding the rally.
Police said the decision was passed to ensure public and road safety and limit road congestion.
MDP said that the rally will be held on July 11, 2016 from 2100 hrs and 0000 hrs and the rally will stop at certain areas and express their opinions at the spots. The rally will start from the MDP haruge near Henveiru Artificial Beach and will conclude at that same spot. MDP said they had informed the Police of the itinerary of the rally via SMS.
MPS said such a mass rally will limit and hamper traffic movement, inconvenience members of the public and cause losses to the public. As such, MPS said they will not allow political activities and rallies to be held on the roads. MPS said the MDP rally will not be held on the roads and in the event the Party proceeds with the rally, then appropriate action will be taken.
MDP Secretary General and two other members attended the meeting. Deputy head of Central Operations Command Superintendent of Police Hussain Rasheed, heads from Specialist Operations Department, Traffic Management Department, Galolhu Police and Maafannu Police attended the meeting.
