Drug Court cases increase
The number of cases filed with the Drug Court has increased compared to 2015.

Drug Court stated that last year, 914 cases were filed with the Drug Court and that the number of cases submitted to the Court this year had already bypassed last year’s figures.

The Government in 2008 had announced that around MVR 2 million worth of drugs get traded every day, giving credence to the severity of the issue and a systematic failure to address the issue.

Speaking to press, Senior Judge Abdu Sattar Abdul Hameed said on average, 816 cases were filed in the Court. With five Judges to review the cases, every Judge has to review on average 163 cases annually. He added that all drug issues are not filed with the Court, but they review the cases of those who wished to go on rehabilitation after confessing to their crimes.

Judge added that around 500 are still in queue for rehabilitation as there is a space issue in the Centers.

The Judge said that when other Courts passed the ruling, the case is completed. However, until the individual fully completes rehabilitation, the cases in Drug Court are open cases and as such, contributed to the lower number of cases reviewed annually. r

He added that state of the art facilities and opportunities to go abroad for rehabilitation will positively impact the work carried out by the Court. He added that presently individuals are allowed to complete their rehabilitation abroad. He said some Indian facilities are now registered and some had completed their rehabilitation there.
