The hastily convened Council meeting of PPM was halted over difference of opinion and lack of required quorum.
Speaking to press, PPM President and former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom said the session was halted after two Council Members had left session, which resulted in the loss of required quorum.
He said that some of the members had raised objections to two members of Council attending the session, citing that those two members had been dismissed from the Party. However, President Maumoon said the Party had not made any decisions to remove any member from the Party. He also said the said two members had not formally dismissed from the Party.
Maumoon said the power to dismiss any member was the prerogative of the Ethics Committee, adding that the Committee meeting held to dismiss the two members was an illegal one, circumventing all laws of the Party. Therefore, he said any decision that is passed in such a situation was illegal from the onset. Maumoon said the Committee was composed of seven members, but in that session only three members attended the session.
The two members supposedly dismissed by the Ethics Committee are President Maumoon’s son and Dhiggaru Constituency MP Faris Maumoon and Council Member Aminath Nadhira.
The Council meeting began at 9pm in PPM office and was chaired by President Maumoon.
This was the first meeting held after factions began to spread within PPM. It was rumored that President Abdullah Yameen will attend the meeting but he did not show up for the meeting.
