High Court orders delay on death penalty implementation
High Court has ordered a delay on implementing the death penalty until the Court finalizes a decree on the issue in Court currently.

Judges Abdullah Didi, Ali Samee and Abdu Rauf delivered a unanimous ruling on the issue.

A private party had filed the issue in Court, stating that some of the regulations on implementing death penalty clashed with other laws.

Supreme Court had passed the death penalty verdict on Hussain Humam over the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali. Though the laws state that the penalty had to be implemented within a 30-day period, Maldives Correctional Service had not made any arrangements for the process.

MSC last reported to Miadhu that the mandated Committee to oversee the process had not been formed. Additionally, MSC said that Islamic Ministry had not sought out the opinions of the next of kin.

Death penalty can be implemented only when the President had reached a decision based on the report filed by the Committee.
