Police begins investigation into the arrestee fund
Maldives Police Service has begun investigations into the fund opened by the opposition to support those jailed for taking part in anti-Government protests.

Adhaalath Party’s Shidhaathaa Shareef, MDP’s Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyer Hassan Latheef today was summoned to the Police to clarify on what they had said regarding the opening of the fund. Their phones were confiscated by the Police under a court order.

Speaking later, Thasmeen said the fund was opened to support those who had been arrested in the protests and that he did not believe that this was an issue.

Speaking to press after launching the fund, Thasmeen said that if an individual is arrested, the fund will provide MVR 1000 and if a person is given a remand period then the fund will provide MVR 5000.

Found individuals, arrested following Friday prayers, have been given remand periods of 15 days today.
