Ungoofaaru Constituency MP Jaufar Dauood in today’s Parliament session said that defamation and character assassination were banned in Islam and Quran was sufficient proof on this.
In today’s session, while debating the Defamation Bill, Dauood had cited examples from Quran supporting his statement.
Jaufar said that Islam protects individuals from defamation, with many scholars arguing that it is a punishable offense in Islam. He added that Quran had clearly banned spreading false allegations.
In spite of this it is notable that MPs are exempt from the bill; MPs cannot be held responsible or accountable for anything they say in Parliament session, however much libelous the claim maybe.
The Parliament sessions are famous for baseless accusations and claims made against MPs. The sessions are broadcast widely on Parliament media channels and live programming. The agendas and the Parliament proceedings are publicly available on the official website.
Islam does not exempt any individual from the law; even the Prophet is not exempt from the commands in Quran.
Therefore, it is extremely hypocritical that the MPs have imposed a rule that cannot be imposed in the first place and make laws that are applicable to the general public and not them.
