Feydhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Didi (IB) has stated that the bill on Defamation will be passed granting full freedom to media and expression.
Speaking in today’s Parliament session Didi said freedom of expression and media are granted rights but stories that defame and are based on lies cannot be allowed to foster. He noted that in UK defamation a punishable offense, with lengthy court procedures and trials. Therefore, he argued that this was not a new thing to the world.
Didi said that he had always advocated truth and therefore he was not concerned over passing the defamation bill.
PPM PG Leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik today said that most European nations had criminalized defamation, with strict penalties. Nihan added that the bill was proposed to retain Islamic principles and thanked the Government for proposing the bill.
