At the Fourteenth Sitting of the Second Session of the People’s Majlis held today, the Bill on Defamation and Freedom of Speech, tabled by Hon. Jaufar Dawood, MP for Ungoofaaru, was passed with one amendment to the Committee Report; with 47 voting in favour. There were 31 votes against.
The Committee Report was presented to the floor by the Chair of Eleven Member Select Committee Hon. Dr. Abdullah Khaleel, MP for Nilandhoo.
Fourteen Members spoke during time allocated following the presentation of the Report.
The First Reading for the Bill was held on 19 July 2016 at the Ninth Sitting of the Second Session of the Majlis; it was sent to and Eleven Member Select Committee on 1 August 2016 at the Eleventh Sitting of the Second Session.
