Popular surfer Hussain Areef (Ibu) has stated that with proper training and opportunities, Maldives is more than capable of bringing out athletes capable of competing in international tournaments and bringing home trophies.
Ibu, who is contesting in the Four Seasons Surfing Championship 2016, spoke to Miadhu regarding his career in surfing. He said that all his wins in international tournaments had been possible due to hard work and self-study. Ibu said that he learned tactics and methods by watching videos of international professionals.
He said that even in the Maldives, there were about five surfers who can compete in international tournaments. Ibu said he had seen immense talent from locals in the atolls.
Ibu added that the opportunity to surf was extensively available in the country, noting that proper training and coaching was vital to developing the field.
He said that it was an invaluable experience and a delight to surf in the competition alongside with international stars. He stated that he was impatient to take on the waves alongside them. Ibu thanked Four Seasons management for organizing a tournament.
Youth Minister Irthisham Adam pledged to further develop the sector for local youth, adding that President Yameen had placed high priority on this.
