President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today ratified the Bill on Defamation and Freedom of Speech, passed on Tuesday, 9th August 2016, at the fourteenth sitting of the second session of the parliament. On ratification, the Act has now been published in the Government Gazette.
The Defamation and Freedom of Speech Act states the legal guidelines on assuring the right to protect one’s reputation and good name, under Article 33 of the Maldivian Constitution. It also states the legal steps to be followed in the event that these rights may be violated.
