India’s Independence Day was celebrated
India’s 70th Independence Day was celebrated in Maldives on 15 August 2016 in the High Commission of India premises with much enthusiasm and patriotic fervour.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Tricolour by the High Commissioner Shri Ákhilesh Mishra in presence of members of the Indian expatriate community, Maldivian friends of India and families of the High Commission. This was followed by the singing of the Indian National Anthem and reading out by the High Commissioner of the Hon’ble President's address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day.
In his own message to the gathering, the High Commissioner spoke about India's extremely close ties of friendship and strategic partnership with Maldives . The High Commissioner thanked the people of Maldives for their warm hospitality and welcome accorded to the large Indian community and the Indian Mission in Maldives. He also applauded the positive role of the Indian community in strengthening India-Maldives cooperation at the grass-root level. Recalling the spirit of freedom struggle, High Commissioner Mishra exhorted all Indians work with the same patriotic fervour to realise the vision of India as a modern, prosperous, technologically advanced, compassionate and humane country.
