Developing Male’ port to for faster clearance
MPL has revealed that the company will soon launch a plan to develop Male’ port for faster goods clearance, shortening the time spent of clearance from 16 days to one day.

Speaking in the ceremony held to open the first cooperative shop in North Harbor this evening, MPL CEO Mohamed Junaid said the President’s Office’s Economic and Youth Council had approved the plans to develop the North Harbor.

Junaid said the due to space constraints, MPL can clear one boat at a time and as such it takes 16 days to clear 600 containers in one boat. Junaid added that once completed, the port will be able to simultaneously clear three boats, allowing faster clearance.

He said this would greatly reduce the time, money and effort spent on clearing goods from the port, thereby reducing the cost of goods. Junaid said this will in turn reduce the price of goods and benefit the members of public.

“The US$ 140 million worth of goods is now being produced. The project involves a large amount of foreign currency that’s why it took some time to begin. But all is now arranged. The bank will inform next week,”

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said that the government aims to reduce the cost of goods and pass on the benefits to the public. the project is expected to cost around MVR 150 million. Minister Saeed said that both Thilafushi and Male’ Ports will be developed, with Thilafushi Port will be used as a transshipment and gateway container location.
