Majlis passes amendment banning any street gathering without Ministry approval
People’s Majlis, on Wednesday, passes the amendment to freedom of assembly so that no street gatherings – political demonstration, rally or any social or celebratory gathering – can be held in Male’ without prior written permission from Maldives Police Service.

The bill, proposed by South Maafannu MP Abdulla Rifau passed with the vote of 37 lawmakers, while 26 lawmakers voted against it, and two lawmakers present during the voting did not vote either way.

The bill states that Ministry of Home Affairs will publish a list of places allowed for street gatherings in Male’ in the Government Gazette within 30 days it is ratified by the Maldivian President.
