Lahiru Madhushankar, Sri Lankan sniper, has denied the charges filed against him for the assassination attempt on the President.
Madushanka is accused of being the hitman they hired to assassinate President Yameen. Defendants, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor and Fazeel Hameed are accused of actively searching for a hitman to assassinate President Yameen and Is’haaq Hussain is accused of transporting the payment to Madushaka – fully aware what they payment was for. The three had denied the charges.
Both the prosecution and defense were to present their evidence. However, the defense had requested for additional time, which was granted. The Judge had decreed that evidence must be presented in the next hearing by both sides on the same day.
Adeeb’s lawyer had said that there were some uncertain aspects of the charges were not clear. The state said the evidence will back the aspects of the case and it will be clear then.
Madushanka’s attorney, Fareesha Abdulla requested for a Sinhalese translator during the hearing held at Criminal Court on Wednesday. Judge denied the request, saying that Madushankar had not complained of any such difficulty during the previous two hearings in the case.
In the hearing, Ishaaq’s lawyer had requested to be transferred home on account of his medical status, stressing that he needed to undergo surgery. The state said that they had not received a medical report that recommended a surgery. The state said that if the defense can produce such a report then they had no issues to transfer him home.
