JP heads to Court over fingerprint issue
Jumhooree Party says the Party will file the case in Court after Elections Commission had passed to strike off 2,641 members from their registry after a one-month period, over lack of fingerprint identification on their membership forms.

JP SG Ahmed Sameer today said the decision was passed in the 90th meeting of the Council this evening after intense discussions with the members. He said JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim had chaired the session, adding that many members who had spoken on the issue noted the loss of rights for those members striken off from the Party register.

“All members passed that the decision was an unconstitutional one. So we’ll find a legal solution for this. We began the proceedings today. We hope to file the case within a week’s time,”

Sameer said that all members of the Party had completed the mandated rules and regulations set in the Political Parties Act. Therefore, he said it was unacceptable and unconstitutional that an amendment will negate the rights granted to them by the law.

Sameer added that EC had carried out the fingerprinting process against the agreed procedures, adding that most of the forms they had submitted were also rejected.

“In one case, we went with the member. The best database for fingerprints is at the National Registration. We got our information from there and they refused to accept it,”

JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim, Deputy Leader Dr. Hussain Rasheed and Ilham Ahmed and other members attended the session.
