Appeal cases has increased by 119% after the establishment of regional branches of HighCourt
Department of Judicial Administration has revealed that appeal cases lodged at regional branches of High Court has increased by 119%. The southern branch of High Court is located in Meedhoo of Addu Atoll.

The northern branch is located in Hdh Kulhudhufushi. In 2015, 28 cases were lodged at High Court southern branch. In 2016, so far 87 cases have been lodged. The court has completed 80% of the cases lodged at the court so far.

High court northern branch was established this year and 70 cases has been lodged at that branch so far this year. Department of Judicial administration said that the number of people wanting to appeal cases at high court has increased now because more people have physical access to the High Court.

This year 383 cases were lodged at the main branch of High Court and the court finished 212 cases. The High Court branch in Male’ covers Male’ and other central atolls.

Department of Judicial Administration has finished all the administrative works needed to start operating the northern branch of the High Court. DJA has allocated a building for the court, hired staffs and trained them. The work of the court will begin as soon as the judges are appointed to the bench.
