Training on library book usage begins in association Oxford University Press
Oxford University Press begins a training on library book usage in the Maldives.
A training on library book usage, has begun today in Male’. The training is conducted by Oxford University Press in association with the Education Ministry of Maldives.
The purpose of the 2-day workshop is to train the teachers on how to best utilize the books at the school libraries. Primary teachers from 40 schools are taking part in the workshop.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the program, State Minister of the Education Ministry, Ahmed Shafeeu spoke about the importance of making it a habit to read books starting at an early age. He said that if young children make it a habit to read books at a young age, they will benefit during their academic life and in the work environment.
The workshop is being conducted by a staff of Oxford University Press. After the training in Male’, more training will be conducted within the atolls as well.
Education ministry signed a three-year agreement with Oxford University Press last year, to supply books to the Maldivian schools and to aid Maldivian schools in language development program and to supply with other related resources to the schools. The whole project is worth 9.5 million Rufiyaa.
The agreement is being implemented in three phases. Under the first phase, 80 schools were provided with 130,000 books and library materials. Each school received around 1728 books, CDs, teachers guide and other reading materials.
Education Ministry said that they chose Oxford University Press to supply books to the schools of Maldives because books Oxford books help students to take up the habit of reading books.
