The documentary made by the opposition who wants to “steal” the government of Maldives reported that senior government officials were involved in a massive money laundering scheme. However, MMA has assured that, the story is baseless and no such thing ever took place.
A statement issued by MMA in both English and Dhivehi said that MMA provides banking services only the banks in Maldives and the government of Maldives.
It is evident from the statement of MMA that money is not brought into the national treasury by labourers with sacks of money. MMA said that there is a due procedure in getting in money to the treasury. According to MMA money can be added to the treasury only with the presence of 4 heads of 4 different state institutions.
While it is like this, it is logistically also not possible to add that much amount of money (1.5 billion dollars) into the treasury just like that.
“The 1.5 billion dollars that the report talks about has never entered the national treasury, those are all lies”. MMA requested media not to spread false information because then people will lose the trust they have in the banking system.
MMA also said that Al Jazeera never requested for a comment from the governor and did not even try to contact her. However, they reported saying that Governor Azeema refused to make a comment.
The opposition accused MMA of money laundering even before and it was never even proved. The fact that Al Jazeera reported exact the same of what the opposition has been saying proves that the report is extremely biased.
The ledger used in MMA cannot be edited just like that because it needs to be kept for several years. It can be always checked by a world financial institution if needed.
