During currently ongoing the General Assemblies of the United Nations, an extra ordinary meeting of CMAG in New York today have decided to not suspend the Maldives.
The decision was made after the government's opposition had exhausted their attempts to get the country suspended.
CMAG have called on the Maldivian political parties to unconditionally begin negotiations and talks. It is noteworthy that this is a call that the government have also made several time on the political parties.
CMAG noted that the Maldives have not yet rectified 6 objectives which the CMAG had recommended during its meeting earlier this year, and that it would proceed to inquire into the Maldives' efforts to achieve those objectives.
Even now, CMAG is closely watching the Maldives and its internal affairs. They meet every six months and publish a report about their findings.
The Commonwealth is currently aiding President Yameen in his efforts to rectify the Maldives' issues and problems. On President Yameen's request, the Commonwealth's special representative to the Maldives have visited the country twice.
Dr Mohamed Shainee, Head of the government's representative in the committee dealing with the inter-party negotiations, told MIADHU today that out of the objectives recommended by CMAG, the only one which the government has had trouble progressing with has been with the inter-party talks.
"That's why the inter-party talks were pointed out by CMAG. CMAG called for the talks to begin without any prior conditions. In addition, CMAG have stated that the problems of the Maldives will be solved locally. So, it's very clear that there is no chance for political activities based in foreign countries to interfere with our local affairs."
Dr. Shainee said that this has been a great boon to the government's efforts to rectify the Maldives' issues.
The government's opposition had great hopes that CMAG would take measures against the Maldives today.
