Time has come for Asian countries to leave Commonwealth and make an Asian organization: Sideeq
Deputy Home Minister Ahmed Sideeq have said that it is time for Asian countries to leave Commonwealth and make an Asian organization.

When he tweeted saying this, Miadhu News asked him for clarification and he said that he “means a lot” by this and this is something that needs to be taken into consideration very seriously.

He tweeted like this during a time, when a lot of Maldivians are urging the government to leave the Commonwealth.

People are saying that being a member of Commonwealth is like those days when there were 3 “presidents” in the Maldives. “There was a time when there were 3 presidents in Maldives. They were President Ibrahim Nasir, President of the Parliament Ahmed Shathir and President of Jamiyyathul Falaah, Aboobakr. There were no other ‘Presidents’ during those days. So having the title of ‘President’ was very prestigious at that time”.

A lot of people are saying that, being a member of the Commonwealth is similar and the only thing Maldives gain by being a member is just some sort of honor and there is no practical benefit. Also people are concerned of the damages inflicted on the Maldives in an international level due to the actions of the Commonwealth.

“One good solution would be to make those Maldivians in UK without Maldivian passports, as the Maldivian community that accepts Commonwealth. They can make one of them their leader who is accepted by the Commonwealth. That way Commonwealth will be happy as well to get some form of participating from Maldivians” said an angry citizen.

Over the last few weeks a lot of people have voiced their opinions on social media urging the government to leave the organization because it does not benefit Maldives in anyway but gives huge damage to Maldives.
