Human Rights Commission of the Maldives have said that, they faced some difficulties in running HRCM because Former HRCM members interpreted the guideline made by Supreme Court inaccurately and tried to work based on this inaccurate interpretation.
HRCM made a statement, saying that they want to clear this issue, because some people are spreading misinformation on the media saying that the guidelines of the Supreme Court are a challenge to the impartial functioning of the Commission.
The statement said that, they got legal consultation and met with the Chief Justice, on 22nd March 2016 to discuss and further clarify the 11-point guideline made by the Supreme Court. Furthermore, the statement said that through this meeting, they identified that the guideline is not a challenge for HRCM to do its constitutional duty and work impartially. Also, starting from that date, the Commission started sending necessary reports to UN and other organizations directly without involving any third parties.
