King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej had died at 8:52 GMT. The Palace of the King released a statement to the media saying that the King, 88 has passed away peacefully in the hospital.
He passed away after being treated for an illness since Sunday. The King has been experiencing ill health since 2014 and has not made any public appearances in the last 2 years.
King Bhumibol is a much loved throughout the nation and seen as a unifying figure in the politically unstable country. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy where the monarch enjoys limited powers. However, during times of political turmoil the King often plays a vital role as a mediator.
The whole nation is in mourning after his passing away. Authorities are expected to release a date of funeral for the monarch.
