Exiting Commonwealth is a backward step for Maldives – JP
Jumuhoory Party (JP) have said that leaving Commonwealth without a referendum would be a step taken backwards.
A statement by the party says that this decision will isolate Maldives in the international community and that Maldives will face negative impacts as a result. The statement also says that it will be the average citizens who will be affected the most by this decision.
JP urged the government to re-join the Commonwealth after taking these things into consideration. Also JP asked the government to bring about political reforms, ensure the rights of the people and treat everyone justly.
In addition, the statement said that leaving Commonwealth like this without a say of the people shows that the Maldives is heading towards a dictatorship.
JP expressed concerns about the sudden decision to leave the Commonwealth by the government during a time when the Commonwealth and UN are trying to resolve political problems in the Maldives.
The statement further says that the Maldives is very much dependent on international organizations like the Commonwealth and various foreign countries. In addition, it says that being a member of such organization, develops the economy, sports, human resources and also helps to promote human rights in the Maldives.
