With the newly sworn 134 lawyers, the total number of lawyers certified to practice in Maldivian courts, reaches 1100. Forty percent of the lawyers are females.
Speaking at the ceremony held tonight to swear in the new lawyers, Attorney General Muhammad Anil said that even though there are many lawyers in Maldives, the government as well as:awyers are not able to provide their services to the atolls. Anil urged some of the lawyers to provide their services to the people living in the atolls.
Anil said that the work of lawyers is not only to advocate in courts, but their scope of work is far wider than that. Anil said that providing legal aid to companies and assisting in forming bills for parliamentarians is also among the work of lawyers.
The lawyers were sworn in by Justice of Supreme Court, Ahmed Areef. The lawyers were officially given their certificates by Attorney General Muhammad Anil.
The ceremony was attended by chief justice, other judges of the supreme court and other senior figures of the judiciary.
