Parliaments approves exiting Commonwealth
The Maldivian Parliament has voted today to exit Commonwealth. A total of 39 members votied in favor of leaving Commonwealth.

In today’s vote 58 members participated and out of that an outright majority of 39 voted for the motion. Among those who voted 18 members voted against leaving and 3 members did not vote either way.

After the general debate, the motion to leave Commonwealth was sent to the national security Committee of the Parliament. The committee decided that if Maldives remains as a member of Commonwealth, they will continue to treat Maldives unfairly, influence Maldivian foreign policy and will undermine the sovereignty of the country.

Opposition parliament members spoke against leaving Commonwealth. Government members were saying that Commonwealth is treating Maldives unfairly. They said that the Commonwealth is trying to influence the governance of Maldives and install a puppet government in Maldives which will rule as the British government desires as it was done Maldives Independence.
