MNDF welfare company contracted to develop Sifavaru for Maldives Coast Guard
MNDF welfare company has been contracted with Ministry of Defence and National Security to develop Sifavaru for the Maldives Coast Guard.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Coast Guard building this afternoon to officially sign the contract, Chief of Staff Major General Ahmed Shiyam said that because of this agreement, the welfare company will make some profits and this will decrease the burden on the state budget.

Shiyam said that lack of a harbor leads to increased costs because coast guard vessels have to be docked at different places. He said that with the money saved by developing Sifavaru they will be able to make 3 more islands like Sifavaru per year.

Shiyam said that at present coast guard vessels can only be repaired at Sri Lanka as closest country to Maldives and for that a minimum of 45,000 dollars is spent on fuel for single hourney.

He said that Sifavaru will be developed with facilities to service large coast guard vessels as well. In addition, they plan to provide services to private vessels as well to increase the revenue.

Shiyam further said that, they will develop facilities for coast guard servicemen to study maritime studies at Sifavaru.
