Ahmed Nihaan Hussain Manik the PG group leader of PPM have said that he will fully support to increases taxes on cigarettes and energy drinks imported to the Maldives.
Speaking about next year’s budget Nihan said that cigarette is still the cheapest in Maldives from this region and that should be changed. He said that he will be the happiest when Maldives is a non-smoking country.
He further said that fizzy drinks and energy drinks are harmful to the health and increasing the duties on these products to discourage using these products is a necessary step. Nihan said that it is obligatory for the government to ensure that the citizens are in good health and that can be achieved by discouraging people to use harmful food products.
In addition, he said that the budget proposed by the government has various beneficial plans for the people and that it is indeed a very perfect budget.
