Parliament has rejected the amendment proposed to the decentralization act to prevent people who are above the age of 65 from running in council elections.
MP Shujaau of PPM proposed the amendment. However, all 65 members present at the parliament today voted to reject the amendment.
Shujaau said that rights ensured by article 16 of the constitution can be limited by a legislation pass by the parliament. He said that he proposed the amendment because, he believes that people of that age cannot fulfil such responsibility. He said that it is also to provide more chances for the youth and he noted that the state gives 5000 Rufiyaa to each and every Maldivian who is above the age of 65.
