Parliament has passed the 26.7 billion Rufiyaa budget proposed for the next year by the government. However, the recommendations made by some parliament members did not pass because they did not get enough support.
The budget was passed with votes from 60 members and 15 members voted against the budget. Also, 2 members to refuse to vote for the budget either way.
One of the most controversial issue regarding the budget was levying an airport development charge on Maldivians. This issue was also accepted to the parliament and was sent to a committee for further research.
Opposition members were saying that, most Maldivians travel abroad out of necessity and it is not acceptable to create additional burdens for them.
The government said that the coming year’s will bring progress and development to the country in all ways. The budget includes mega projects like development of new airports and huge land reclamation projects. The budget was passed after increasing developmental projects to some areas as well.
